Drawings, ornamental designs and text can be scratched into glass, or into paint applied to glass, either by hand or by machine. Various methods exist. These are described in the terminology list.

Wheel engraving is a decorative technique for glass surfaces that uses a rotating copper wheel and abrasive discs of various materials and sizes. The technique is like grinding but requires considerably greater skill. It was already used in ancient Egypt, Syria, Persia and the Roman Empire and was later adopted in Germany and Bohemia.
