treatment unstable glass
An ongoing study is investigating whether a protective coating can be applied to unstable glass to slow the process of atmospheric degradation. Such a coating must be compatible, stable, durable and reversible (removable without damaging the glass). Promising results are being achieved with a protective treatment of glass surfaces using amine-functionalised dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles.
Research is also examining whether specific environmental conditions can slow the degradation of unstable glass. In an ongoing study, glass is being stored under various conditions and the degradation process closely monitored. The information obtained may help improve climatic guidelines for unstable glass.
It is also important to consider the impact, particularly the carbon footprint, of conservation treatments, including preventive measures. Various studies are examining their impact in four areas: people and the environment, climate change, resources, and professional requirements. The GoGreen website will provide updates on a forthcoming app for easily assessing the impact of conservation measures.
